The year was 2014, the plate was breakfast sausages, and thus the first hidden gem was found by HelpMeOrder co-founder Mina Michail. He then brought this idea up to his lifelong best friend Peter Francis during a skype chat that went something like this:

Peter and Mina have been bouncing start up ideas off each other since they were both in university studying computer engineering, Mina at the University of Toronto and Peter at McMaster. They began using instant messengers to bounce these ideas off each other when they took internships in different cities and this activity carried on as the two continued in their careers and personal lives.

All these years of brainstorming hatched tons of ideas, most of which were pretty dumb if we are being honest here, but HelpMeOrder just stuck. The idea came to Mina when he discovered a hidden gem meal at the resort the friends were staying at on a “work-cation” (Another brain-child of the pair, simply the concept of working but on the beach. Simple but revolutionary). He discovered the breakfast sausages at the kid’s table was the best thing to eat for breakfast and then shared that information with Peter, who would have never discovered them if it wasn’t for Mina’s recommendation. They had found the best plate around. Sound familiar?

The two began working on the app which was then launched in August of 2016, was named one of the top ten start ups in the Evolution program ran by the Genesis Center (an incubator for technology based start ups) and placed second in the local Pitch and Pick competition, where start ups compete to see who has the best promotional pitch. Peter and Mina hope that their app will one day become the standard way that people look at restaurant menus.
